Girls Swim Cruises Past Sacred Heart

Lady Spartans take on Glastonbury tomorrow, which finally broke Cheshire's 25-year winning streak last week.

The overwhelming depth of the Amity girls swim team was very apparent last Thursday night as the Lady Spartans defeated Sacred Heart Academy 96-80 in a Southern Connecticut Conference meet at the Wilbur Cross High pool in New Haven. With this victory over the Pacers, the undefeated Lady Spartans won nine of the meet’s 12 events and improved their record to 6-0. In addition to winning each of the three relays, each of the six individual events that Amity claimed, saw a different swimmer finish first. Dana Grindall not only won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 57.65 seconds, she led a sweep in that event. Teammates Marina Shatskish (2:09.15) and Elizabeth Lubin  (2:18.75) followed her to the wall. It was the same exact story in the 200 individual medley.  Dana Chung’s 2:18.71 was good for first place. Stephanie Antonellis (2:26.55) was second and Lydia Pokluda added a third place 2:27.34.

While SHA won the 50 free, Rachel Holden was second (26.84) and Jessica Kochiss took third place (27.75). Amanda Craig’s 221.63 was tops in diving.

Sacred Heart’s other win came in the 100 butterfly but Anna Lu placed second (1:03.95) and Morgan Turner’s 1:05.12  was good for third place.

After Lindsay Morton (58.440, Shatskikh (59.25), and Samantha Austin (1:00.34) swept the 100 free, Madeline Snow (5:25.10) and Katherine Holden  (5:43.55) went 1-2 in the 500 free.

Mollee Lasto won the 100 backstroke in 1:05.66 and Melissa Gulia placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1L15.88).

Shannon Early, Morton, Katherine Holden, and Kochiss posted a first place time of 1:59.47 in the meet’s first event, the 200 medley relay.  Chung, Lu, Kochiss, and Grindall won the 200 free relay in 1:45.99. The meet  ended with Amity also winning the 400 free relay as Chung, Lu, Snow, and Grindall touched the wall in 3:47.59.

“My girls swam another great meet,” Coach Todd Rainey said. “Look out Glastonbury!"

Amity visits the Tomahawks on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Last week, Cheshire had its 281 consecutive meet winning streak snapped by Glastonbury. Until that loss to the Tomahawks, the Rams had not lost a dual meet since 1986.
