Even while winter weather continues to plague us, we are sowing seeds of change in Ansonia's Schools, thanks to our FoodCorps service member, Eileen Garcia! Over the winter months, Ms. Garcia has been taking the lessons about healthy food and where it comes from into the classroom. Over the last six weeks or so, Ms. Garcia has been working with Ms. Tedosio's first grade class at Prendergast Elementary School to grow herbs under a grow light in the classroom. In the process, the students learn about plant parts, understand the plant lifecycle - particularly what can and can't grow in our winter climate - and record their observations using all their senses. Here, first graders are recording progress of their basil plants that have been growing on a counter in the corner of the classroom.
Massaro Community Farm is proud to host a FoodCorps service member as she works to promote better health and nutrition in area schools.
