Massaro Food Donations Exceed 7,000 Pounds

Massaro Community Farm issues its 2014 Annual Report, and with it, details of its food donation program for the past season.

Concluding its fifth growing season in December, Massaro Community Farm reported that it had donated 7,052 pounds of quality organic vegetables to local hunger relief agencies in 2014. Massaro Farm maintains a commitment to donate at least 10% of what it grows each year to selected organizations that can then share that produce with those who need it most. Here’s what some of our food recipients had to say:

“As a recipient of your wonderful organic farm fresh vegetables every week, my family and I are very thankful for your generosity.”

“The vegetables were a great help to me and my family. There were always different assortments of vegetables that my family enjoyed preparing and eating. We learned how to prepare and eat new vegetables that we never had before.”

Our food donations for 2014 were down slightly when compared to the prior year, primarily due to the farm allowing a large portion of its south field to rest for the entire season. This field had been in production since the farm’s inception. However, responsible land stewardship requires soil replenishment through rest and the planting of cover crops.

Thanks to the outstanding efforts of Farm Manager Steve Munno we were able to provide 12% of this year’s harvest, with a market value of more than $21,000, to our hunger relief partner agencies - Woodbridge Senior Services, The Salvation Army of Ansonia and Connecticut Food Bank.

In five short years, the farm has renovated four original farm structures, cultivated 71/2 acres of organic fruits and vegetables for its CSA subscribers, developed a nature trail, offered community-wide events, and instituted farm-based educational programming.

Shining a spotlight on the season is the farm’s annual farm-to-table dinner, Dinner on the Farm, which takes place each Labor Day Weekend.
