NAACP Calls for Action After Racial Woodbridge Democrat Post

The Valley NAACP said an apology wasn't enough after a social media post calling a state senator a "token black Republican."

WOODBRIDGE, CT — A lukewarm apology isn't enough after a Woodbridge Democrat posted a social media message referring to state Sen. George Logan as a "token black Republican," according to the head of the Naugatuck Valley NAACP.

Veterinarian Dr. Cheryl Sackler posted the comment on a Facebook page. She later apologized and said the post was directed at Logan personally, but at the party, according to the New Haven Register.

Logan said he was thankful for support from both sides of the aisle condemning the comment. Both Republican and Democrat senate leaders publicly denounced the comment. To sign up for Bethany and Woodbridge breaking news alerts and more, click here.

“In this era of heightened political insensitivity, there is no place at the national or local level to use race, religion sexual orientation or economic status as a barometer of an individual’s worth,” said Democrat Senate President Pro Tempore Martin Looney. “These types of statements directed at Senator Logan are just wrong—regardless of party—and do not belong in our public discourse.”

Republican State Sen. Len Fasano thanked Looney for his support.

"No one should be judged or measured based on their race, religion, or sexual orientation," Fasano said.
The prejudice seen in certain comments posted on Facebook are inexcusable. We must condemn bigotry in unity. This is an issue where Republicans and Democrats in Connecticut can and will stand together.”
