Woodbridge: All About Insulation

The Woodbridge Energy Challenge hosted a workshop to educate residents about special insulation pricing and an insulation rebate

Residents learned about the different types of insulation, how much to use and how to take advantage of state rebates and special pricing for Woodbridge residents at the second of four Woodbridge Energy Challenge workshops on Wednesday, Feb. 4.

Currently, the state is offering up to a 50% rebate for new insulation. The two companies participating in the Woodbridge Energy Challenge -- New England Smart Energy and New England Conservation Services -- are offering discounted pricing and a participation rebate in addition to the state rebate. The discounted pricing is $1.33 per square foot of insulation and the participation rebate is tiered so that as more Woodbridge residents install insulation the rebate increases, up to 12% for a potential total rebate of 62%.

To take advantage of the state rebates, residents must first have completed a Home Energy Solutions assessment. As part of the Woodbridge Energy Challenge, New England Conservation Services and New England Smart Energy have agreed to donate $25 of the $99 assessment fee to the Woodbridge Food and Fuel Fund.

“I’d like to thank the Ad Hoc Energy Advisory Task Force for creating this program and providing these educational workshops,” said First Selectman Ellen Scalettar. “The Woodbridge Energy Challenge is helping Woodbridge residents make important decisions about how to save energy at home.”

Chris Jobson (pictured), of New England Conservation Services, led the insulation workshop. “By and large, the most important thing we can do, before we worry about how we’re producing heat or cooling in our homes, is trying to keep the inside in and the outside out,” said Jobson. “Insulation is the single most cost effective energy upgrade in most typical housing.”

Jobson explained the benefits of different types of insulation, explained R values and helped attendees understand how much insulation is enough.

The Woodbridge Energy Challenge is one-stop shopping for residents who want to learn more about saving energy and going solar. Two scheduled workshops remain: A solar workshop on April 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Center Gym and a Heating and Cooling systems workshop on March 3, at 6 p.m. at the Woodbridge Town Library’s meeting room.
