Judge Rejects Plea in Branford Fatal DUI Crash

The defendant was facing one year in prison, but will now serve a longer sentence.

A Superior Court Judge said no deal Tuesday concerning an agreement Vincent Mauro, 32, of Branford, struck with prosecutors, which would have led him to serve one year in prison in connection with his wife’s death, the New Haven Register reports.

Vincent Mauro crashed his car while driving under the influence in August 2013. His blood alcohol level at the time of the crash was more than double the legal limit. His wife, Megan McAuliffe, 29, died as a result of the crash.

The victim’s family last week argued for a greater sentence and the judge agreed Tuesday and rejected the plea deal, reports Michelle Tuccitto Sullo.

Mauro told the judge he wants to keep his plea, and plans to negotiate new terms with prosecutors, which will include more than one year in prison, the Register reports. Mauro said he just wants to serve his time and end both families suffering. He said in court that his wife was his entire world.

Mauro had the option of withdrawing his plea and going to trial, but he rejected that option.
