Bridgeport Man ID'd As Victim In Fatal Five Mile River Crash In Darien

DARIEN, CT — Police said they have identified the person who was killed after an SUV plunged into Five Mile River in Darien last week as Youssoupha Diagne, 21, of Bridgeport.

A 21-year-old woman, who has not been identified, was also in the SUV at the time of the crash. She is currently in stable condition and recovering at a local hospital, police said in an update Tuesday.

Around midnight on Feb. 9, Darien police received a report that an older model Nissan Rogue was traveling eastbound on Tokeneke Road when it crossed into the westbound lane, left the roadway near the Rowayton town line, and plunged into Five Mile River, police said.

Darien police officers pulled the 21-year-old woman from the river, who was found floating face down in an outgoing current about 100 yards from the crash scene, police noted. First responders rendered lifesaving aid before she was taken to the hospital.

Utilizing cold water gear, Darien firefighters recovered Diagne from the submerged SUV, police said. He was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Two Darien police officers who entered the frigid waters are still recovering with non-life threatening injuries, police added.

Police have not said who the driver of the SUV was, or what caused the crash.

The incident remains under investigation.
