A Little History of The Bridgeport Police DEPT.
BRIDGEPORTS LAW ENFORCEMENT ESTABLISHMENT

I'M just fascinated with our city police history. The very first police station here in our city was enacted JANUARY 7,1837.THE BILL TITLED ''NIGHT WATCH''was proclaimed to protect the lives and property of our former residents.THEN on OCTOBER 17TH1837 THE COURT OF COMMONS COUNCIL had appointed 25 special constables. These constables patroled our streets. They had the power to arrest anyone.BUT these constables did not get paid a salary but received some form of compensation from the courts.Years later in 1848 our police station was in the cellar at BANK AND WATER STREETS.LATER still it was moved to the old city hall.SO many changes took place with the police department over the years and today it stands yet at CONGRESS ST.
