True Crime Podcast Revisits Unsolved 1993 Killing Of Bridgeport Woman

"The Deck" podcast recently examined the 1993 killing of Bridgeport resident Milagros Nieves.

BRIDGEPORT, CT — A national true-crime podcast has released an episode examining the unsolved 1993 killing of Bridgeport resident Milagros Nieves.

"The Deck" released the episode Wednesday, and it has quickly risen to no. 3 on Apple's chart of most watched true-crime shows, according to Bridgeport Police Det. Jeffrey Holtz. The program covers the Sept. 10, 1993, homicide of Nieves, 49, who was stabbed to death in her apartment at 223 Iranistan Ave.

Police said Nieves was babysitting her 3-year-old granddaughter at the time of the killing. The child survived and was found covered in blood. The case remains unsolved.

Nieves and her family were longtime Bridgeport residents and lived in the Greene Homes and Marina Village public housing complexes before the family moved out of state after her death, according to Holtz.

Producers of "The Deck" contacted the Bridgeport Police Department several months ago about the case. A production team spent two days in Bridgeport in April conducting interviews at police headquarters and recording video at locations connected to the investigation with assistance from the department's Homicide Unit, Holtz said.

The episode, titled "Milagros Nieves (3 of Clubs, Connecticut)," includes an interview with Det. Frank Podpolucha, a 34-year veteran of the department who was among the first patrol officers to respond to the scene in 1993. Family members also participated in interviews.

"The Deck" is hosted by Ashley Flowers. Laura Frater reported the episode, which was produced by Audiochuck.

Bridgeport police said investigators hope renewed attention to the case generates new information that could lead to an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call the department's tip line at 203-576-TIPS or Det. Holtz at 203-581-5293.
