Boater Faces New Charge in Candlewood Lake Propeller Death

​Environmental Conservation Police arrested the man after he allegedly tried to evade the scene of a collision.

BROOKFIELD, CT — The man charged for his alleged role in the death of a Waterbury teacher on Candlewood Lake last summer now faces new charges.

Gary Morrone, 66, who pleaded not guilty to charges of first-degree reckless boating and failure to report a boating accident, now faces a charge of criminally negligent homicide.

Enironmental Conservation Police arrested Morrone after he allegedly tried to evade the scene of a collision between the boat he was piloting and Wanda Tirado, 38, on June 19.

Earlier this month, investigators concluded that Tirado was killed when she was struck by the propeller of Morrone’s boat while both were out together on the lake.

Morrone was released on a $10,000 bond. A pre-trial conference is scheduled for mid-March.
