“It doesn’t start on cold mornings, the seats are torn, and the windows leak on the inside,” said Robbin Ruffino the Canton Dial a Ride van. These are just a few of the items on the van she pointed out to Larry and I on Wednesday, January 29, 2014. What we noticed in particular was how bitterly cold it was on the van itself. Ms. Ruffino assured us the heat was on full blast.
Scotch tape held a door closed on a utility door, electrical tape held together pieces of the arm that lifts the wheel chair ramp and the ramp itself vibrates mercifully when in use. The positioning of the seatbelts is not feasible for someone without limitations; I cannot imagine what it is like for someone with limitations.
There is a film covering the outside of the van leaving stains on the windows. This is the fire protection coating slowly running off. Ms. Ruffino stated that there is capacity for two (2), however when it is full (two), there is absolutely no room for maneuvering around; not even enough room for the ramp.
These are just a few of the physical limitations we saw in a quick 2-minute interview. Would you like to have to travel to your destination in these conditions every day?
