Cheshire Wins First American Legion State Title

Waldron leads Cheshire past RCP in decisive game of championship series.

The Cheshire American Legion baseball team has had a memorable postseason run, so it seemed inevitable that a decisive third game would be required in its state championship series.

After beating RCP (Rocky Hill-Cromwell-Portland) 10-5 in the opener on Friday, Cheshire lost the second game 7-5 Saturday morning to set up the winner-take-all third game Saturday afternoon at Cubeta Stadium in Stamford.

Kyle Waldron made sure Cheshire’s postseason days were not over, going the distance in a complete-game shutout in a 3-0 victory and leading Cheshire to its first-ever Legion state title.

“It’s probably the best outing of the year for me,” Waldron told Jimmy Zanor of the Middletown Press/GameTimeCT. “I had confidence in all of my pitches and I was able to throw them in all different kind of counts. I didn’t want it to get to a third game. It feels really good. I’m just glad we won.”

Cheshire (31-11) will play again in the Northeast Regional tournament (Aug. 7-11) in Middletown. Cheshire will face the champion from Maine Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
