Disagreement Brewing Over Possible Demolition Of Historic Cheshire Building: Report

The head of the Cheshire Historic Commission says members of the Town Council want to tear down the structure for tennis courts.

CHESHIRE, CT — A 155-year-old historic home in Cheshire could be torn down to build tennis courts, according to the Chair of the town's Historic District Commission, who says its members of the Town Council who want to do it.

The New Haven Register reports that a motion to demolish the former Stephen Ives House, which rests on a 10-acre farm adjacent to Bartlem Park, could come as early as this evening, July 20, when the council considers a resolution to do just that.

Voters approved the $3 million purchase of the farm last year, but Historic District Commission Chair Elizabeth Fox says that the property is big enough to utilize without tearing down the historic structure.
