Abbott Tech Hairdressing Students Have Their Eyes On Cancer
Henry Abbott Technical High School Hairdressing and Cosmetology students recently obtained a certification in early detection of skin cancer

The Hairdressing and Cosmetology students at Henry Abbott Technical High School recently embraced a unique educational certification opportunity through an organization called Eyes On Cancer. Eyes on Cancer is a nonprofit cancer awareness organization that teaches beauty professionals to identify skin cancer in its earliest stages. It was founded by retired orthopedic surgeon and cancer survivor Dean Foster and his wife, Jeanne Braa Foster, an award-winning hair stylist and former Artistic Director for John Paul Mitchell Systems.
It has been recognized that cosmetologists and barbers are often the first to detect abnormal moles and other skin lesions on the scalp and neck of their customers. Their observations can encourage some clients to consult with a physician promptly and possibly have skin cancers diagnosed at an early stage, when they are usually treatable.
The Eyes on Cancer mission is to train beauty professionals in schools and salons to be aware of skin cancer and to recognize how to detect it early. Their certification is an industry recognized stackable, portable credential that will lend support to your child’s resume and career readiness. Abbott Tech hairdressing students were the first in our district to obtain this honorable certification!
