Danbury City Council Supports Mayor's Proposed Budget

The budget proposal of $257 million for the next fiscal year represents a $6.5 million increase over the current budget.

DANBURY, CT — The Mayor has submitted his budget to the City Council, and the council so far seems to like what it sees.

Mayor Mark Boughton’s budget proposal of $257 million for the next fiscal year represents a $6.5 million increase over the current budget. Despite that, analysts note that property taxes are decreased, made possible by an 8.5 percent increase in the city’s tax base after last year’s revaluation. The budget also calls for a hiring freeze among all but public safety personnel, and fixing expenditures at 2017-18 levels for many departments.

The City Council gave preliminary approval for the budgets covering the town clerk, mayor’s office, libraries, permitting and planning. They will review the the remainder of the city budget at meetings throughout this week. The council will give final approval at its meeting early next month.
