Danbury Hat Factory Site Could Become Transitional Housing for Women
City council is weighing the donation of the site during its meeting Tuesday.
DANBURY, CT — The site of a former hat factory could become the new location for the Women's Center of Danbury.
In a letter to City Council ahead of its meeting Tuesday, Mayor Mark Boughton asked City Council to review the potential donation of the former Mallory Hat site at 89 Rose Hill Avenue to the Women's Center. The donation would allow for the construction of the construction of the center's new transitional housing center.
Citing recent domestic violence statistics reported by Forbes Magazine, Boughton says its time for the city to do its part.

"Addressing this issue could save thousands of lives, but as long as the symptoms and consequences of domestic violence go unnoticed or overlooked and unpunished, nothing changes," wrote Boughton."I believe it is time for Danbury to do our part and break the silence."
Boughton added that the property contains levels of environmental contamination, the city intends to work with the nonprofit to make the project a reality.

The Women's Center of Danbury provides domestic violence, sexual assault and resource services for adults and children. The center serves thousands of women in Northern Fairfield and parts of Litchfield Counties, Boughton says.
