Hartford 'Confusion' Holding Up Danbury Internet Plan, Mayor Says: Report

The plan could bring high speed internet to every home in the city for $15 per month.

DANBURY, CT — Danbury residents could soon be able to purchase high-speed internet from the city for $15 per month, but discussion in Hartford is holding that plan up, reports the News Times.

As described in Mayor Mark Boughton's 2015 State-of-the-City address, Danbury could become the first municipality in the state to bill residents for high-speed internet services. In a meeting with city department heads, Boughton said that confusion in Hartford is due to a challenge in explaining the city's intentions, reports the publication.

Boughton says the city wants to "leverage the buying power" of Danbury residents to provide low-cost internet, and says that the city does not want to build a broadband internet network. State approval is required because the city would bill for the service through a special fund.
