Man Who Assaulted Danbury Officer Could Seek Insanity Defense

A Danbury officer was seriously assaulted by a man in July 2016, according to police.

DANBURY, CT — A man who assaulted a police officer may seek an insanity defense, according to recent statements made in court.

Pierre Elhayak, 21, was charged with assaulting Officer Joe Pooler who was in his parked cruiser July 30, 2016 near Jimmy's Market on Germantown Road, according to police.

Elhayek was observed pacing up and down the road before be began kicking Pooler's police cruiser. Pooler got out of the vehicle and thought Elhayek might have needed help, but Elhayek attacked Pooler, police said.

Pooler was kicked in the head and body several times and eventually managed to get to his cruiser radio to signal for help. He was taken into custody with the help of other officers.

A doctor working for the defense completed a report that indicated Elhayek could be acquitted due to mental illness, according to the News-Times. A motion hasn't been filed yet.
