Obit: Matthew J. Czajka, 101, Of Danbury

He was born in Danbury and moved back to the city later in life.

On the 20th day of February 2018, Matthew J. Czajka passed away peacefully at the Danbury Hospital following a brief illness. He was 101 years old.

Matthew was born in Danbury, Connecticut on May 18, 1916. He attended St. Peter School and Danbury High School. As a youth he enjoyed baseball, golfing, swimming, fishing, bowling, dancing, going to the movies and to New York City. Growing up on State Street during the depression, he had many stories to tell of the way that Danbury used to be. As a young man he worked as a hatter until he joined the Army and served our country in World War II from 1943 until 1945. Matt landed on Omaha Beach on June 9, 1944 and he fought from Normandy to Berlin, as a result he was awarded five battle stars on his ribbon.

Matthew married the love of his life, Winifred, on January 12, 1946. They moved to Miami, Florida and built a life together there. He worked as a parking supervisor and in various positions on the golf course. After the loss of his wife in 2000, he moved to Green Acres, Florida where he spent time with his best friend, Edward Zurinskas, of 90 years. They remained active where they golfed and bowled. After the loss of his friend in 2010, Matthew moved back to Danbury, Connecticut to be with his family. He loved living at "The Gardens" (assisted living) where he was treated with love and compassion.
