DANBURY, CT — A resolution to rename the city's sewer plant after HBO host John Oliver goes before the City Council Tuesday night.

Mayor Mark Boughton said that the comedian has already made good on about $30,000 of the $55,000 he pledged to donate to local charities if the local wastewater treatment facility was named "The John Oliver Memorial Sewer Plant."

The mayor said a large donation to local food banks was also in the pipeline.

"We have other financial institutions that will now be donating a 'significant amount of money' ... north of six figures" Boughton said on a Facebook livestream on Monday.

Boughton is also promising residents personally guided tours of the sewer plant for $500 donations to the food pantries. Interested parties should contact Taylor O'Brien at t.obrien@danbury-ct.gov.

If the resolution makes it past the Council's scrutiny on Tuesday, it will go to a committee for review. Boughton urged residents to "email Taylor with positive comments, say that you want this to happen."

The journey began back in August, when the comedian used his HBO show "Last Week Tonight" to insult the city and tell residents they had a "standing invite" to receive "a thrashing from John Oliver — children included." Boughton countered with a pledge to name the city sewage plant after him, a notion which seemed to tickle the satirist.
