State Board of Ed Approves First Charter School for Danbury

The votes, 7-1 in favor, were cast at a morning public session in Hartford on Wednesday.

DANBURY, CT — The state Board of Education has given the green light for Danbury's first charter school, the News Times has reported.

The votes, 7-1 in favor, were cast at a morning public session in Hartford on Wednesday.

The Danbury Prospect Charter School would be modeled after the Brooklyn Prospect Charter School which operates four charter schools in New York. The school would grow by one grade a year, beginning with 110 sixth graders. Within five years the school would be built out into a grades 6-12 college preparatory school of 55o students.

The BOE also approved a second charter school for Norwalk on Wednesday. The two proposals were among five that applied to the board when a call for applications was put out last January.

Where the school would be located -- and whether it would open at all -- will be determined when and if the state legislature provides the funding.
