State Welcome Center in Danbury On Governor's Chopping Block: Report

Under the Governor's proposed budget, all seven rest areas along interstate highways in Connecticut would close.

DANBURY, CT — The future of the Connecticut State Welcome Center off Exit 2 on I-84 in Danbury will close if Gov. Dannel Malloy's proposed budget is passed by the legislature, reports the News Times.

The move would close all seven rest areas along the interstate highways in Connecticut. The move would not affect service plazas.

The move would save the state an expected $534,000 per year, eliminating the positions of 12 rest area attendants. The Motor Transport Association of Connecticut opposed the move, saying the rest areas are important to the traveling public.
