WCSU Department of Education and Educational Psychology Announces New Graduate Programs

DANBURY, CONN. — The Department of Education and Educational Psychology at Western Connecticut State University will host an Open House from 2 to 7 p.m. on Thursday, March 22, in the Ballroom of the Campus Center on the university’s Westside campus, 43 Lake Ave. Extension in Danbury. Among the Open House events will be the announcement of three new graduate programs: Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Secondary Education with a cross-endorsement in Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL); Master of Science in Education (MSED) in Special Education K-12; and MSED in Literacy and Language Arts K-12. Faculty also will discuss the Master’s Counseling Program and Ed.D. in Instructional Leadership.

The MAT Secondary Education with a cross-endorsement in TESOL is for career changers who majored in biology, English, chemistry, math, social studies/history or Spanish. The mission is to prepare secondary educators to work collaboratively in varied settings and cultural contexts. Using an inquiry approach, the program prepares secondary educators to differentiate instruction, advocate for diverse learners, and assess and create interventions.

The MSED in Literacy and Language is for already-certified educators to become reading specialists, literacy coaches and professional leaders who are highly knowledgeable in the theoretical and practical foundations of literacy, and who recognize access to literacy education and work to impact student learning in culturally diverse populations in Pre-K–12 schools and communities.
