Darien Historical Society Launches Costume Exhibit April 27
"Treasures of the Costume Collection – 1740 – 1930 " highlights wardrobe gems.
From Darien Historical Society: Objects of enchantment and delight are the inspiration for a stunning upcoming exhibit, “Treasures of the Costume Collection – 1740 – 1930 ” which opens at the Darien Historical Society with a Champagne Reception on Friday, April 27 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Curated by Babs White and members of the Costume Committee, the exhibit will serve as a centerpiece for several lunch receptions and lectures throughout the spring. “What makes a treasure? It may be a period piece in remarkably good condition for its age, or it may express devotion to perfection by an Haute Couture designer,” said White, who has curated the Society’s costume collection for over 40 years. “Or, it could simply have a unique human story connected to it.”
Spanning from an 18 th century handmade silk dress with delicate matching shoes to a drop-waist 1930’s dress with matching shoes, purse and cloche, the exhibit will also feature smaller items such as delicate fans, intricately beaded purses and tasseled shawls. One particularly superb treasure is a bridal collection complete with a wedding dress dating from 1883, a peignoir and complete lingerie trousseau trimmed with lace and satin bows. The Champagne Opening Reception will be $50 for members and $65 for non- members. There will also be two Ladies’ Luncheons with the Curator on Wednesday, May 2 and Thursday, May 10, both at 11:30 a.m. Tickets will be $25 for members and $35 for non-members. Space is limited.
