Darien Public Schools Launches Parent Survey On New Device Guidelines
A five-minute online parent survey from the school district will be open until Oct. 23.
DARIEN, CT — Darien Public Schools is seeking feedback on the new personal mobile device guidelines that were implemented at the beginning of the school year.
The guidelines were established "to cultivate a safe and focused learning atmosphere, free from distractions," and they prohibit the use of cell phones and smartwatches by students in grades PK-8.
A five-minute online parent survey from the school district will be open until Oct. 23, Superintendent of Darien Public Schools Dr. Alan Addley said in an email to families on Friday.

"Your responses will help the District assess how well the guidelines are understood, the impact on students and the learning environment, and what, if any, revisions are needed," Addley said. "Staff and students in grades PK-8 will complete a similar survey next week. Results will remain anonymous and will be discussed as part of the review of the new guidelines at the November 12th Board of Education Meeting."
At the same time, Addley said, an advisory council of Darien High School students, parents, staff, and administrators will meet throughout the fall to evaluate high school practices related to cell phones and smartwatches.

The advisory council is expected to present its findings and recommendations at the Jan. 14, 2025, meeting, according to Addley.
"As with all school policies, these guidelines require the active support of our parents. Thank you for your partnership and in having ongoing conversations with your child(ren) regarding these new practices," Addley added. "Thank you also for making adjustments to your daily routines and the way you communicate with your children during the school day. Your insights and support are invaluable as we work together to shape policies that best serve our students and community. Together, we are building a brighter, more connected future for our children."
