DeMaio Tosses One-Hitter As Darien Softball Wins Again

Blue Wave blanks Wilton 4—0 to improve to 7—0.

The undefeated Darien High School softball team used another strong performance from Jessica Demaio to blank Wilton, 4-0, Friday afternoon.

Demaio allowed only one hit and struck out nine for the Blue Wave, who improved to 7-0.

"Jess really pitched great today," Darien coach Nick Demaio said of his niece. "With the exception of the first inning, she pitched a perfect game."

The scoring began in the second inning after Kelly Fahey drew a walk. Captain Michele Picarro then put down a solid bunt to advance Fahey to second.

Freshman Emma Hamilton, who was 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, followed with an RBI single to center  to score Fahey.

"We were really picked up by Emma today," said Demaio. "Take away her three hits and we might not win this game."

Great defensive plays by Wilton centerfielder Stacy Pokora kept the game close. Pokora made two diving catches in centerfield saving at least three runs.

"We were hitting the ball hard, just right at people," coach Demaio said. "If those balls hit to centerfield dropped, this game would have been won by a much larger margin. But she (Pokora) played great out there."

While the Blue Wave managed only six hits, they allowed only three baserunners and committed no errors.

"Our bats at the top of the order can use some work, but we're confident that we'll turn it around," Demaio added.

Darien looks to keep its undefeated season going on Monday, when it visits Greenwich in another FCIAC contest.
