From local fields to national fame, these stars got their start in Durham.

Sports run deep in Durham, and Coginchaug High School has long been at the heart of it. Itβs no surprise some standout talent once wore the Blue Devil uniform. Today we're celebrating five unforgettable athletes from Coginchaug High School who made a name for themselves well beyond the hometown field.
1. Kate Schulten - Award-Winning Track & Cross-Country Star
Kate Schulten was a standout track and field and cross-country athlete at Coginchaug Regional High School before continuing her athletic career at the collegiate level at Fordham University. During her time at Coginchaug, she received coaches' awards in cross country and indoor track, and was also named team captain for the outdoor team. She competed in distance events and represented the Blue Devils with strong performances in both cross country and outdoor track meets. (Sources: Fordham Sports)
2. Colin Murphy - Golf State Champion
Colin Murphy was a multiβsport athlete at Coginchaug who competed in golf, football and basketball during his high school years. Murphy earned multiple accolades during his time as a Blue Devil, including First-Team All-Shoreline Conference and First-Team All-State Connecticut Golf, and won two state championships. Recognized as one of the top athletes in his class in high school, Murphy continued his career on the fairway and currently competes on the Assumption University golf team. 3. Amalia R. DeMartino - Softball All-State Player
Amalia R. DeMartino was one of Coginchaugβs most decorated softball athletes. As a fourβyear varsity starter at shortstop, she won two state titles, earned multiple AllβState and AllβConference honors and was recognized as a First Team AllβState player and AllβShoreline Conference selection during her high school career. DeMartino was instrumental in Coginchaugβs success, with her offensive and defensive playmaking ability. She also played varsity basketball, showcasing her athletic diversity. She continued her softball career at St. John Fisher University and became an instant key player her freshman year. DeMartino was an All-Empire 8 Conference First-Team honoree multiple seasons and a College Sports Communicators Academic All-District team selection. Sources: SJF Athletics)
4. Piper Remillard - Current Collegiate Tennis Player
Piper Remillard is one of the most accomplished tennis players in Blue Devils history. During her high school career, she compiled an unbeaten 75β0 record in Shoreline Conference singles competition, winning four consecutive Shoreline Conference singles titles. That remarkable stretch made her one of the most consistent and competitive players in the region and earned her AllβState recognition as early as her sophomore season. 5. MacGuire OβSullivan - All-State Baseball Star
MacGuire OβSullivan was a multiβsport standout at Coginchaug, playing baseball, basketball and soccer during his high school years. His athletic talents were especially evident on the diamond, where he earned First-Team All-Shoreline, First-Team All-State and Shoreline Pitcher of the Year during his senior season. OβSullivan continued his baseball career at Assumption University, where he started in three games his freshman season and appeared in 12 overall.
