John Guy LaPlante will be featured at the Killingworth Library’s Local Author Series on Monday, November 21 at 7pm. The Deep River resident will discuss “The Real Peace Corps and how it could change your life. Yes, yours!”
LaPlante, the author of “Around the World at 75. Alone, Dammit!” and “Around Asia in 80 Days. Oops, 83!”, just published the eye-opening “27 Months in the Peace Corps. My Story, Unvarnished.”
“I wish I had had this book when I was thinking about this big decision!,” he said of his latest work.
The octogenarian recently served as a Peace Corps volunteer in Ukraine and learned that he was the program’s oldest volunteer in the world.
“Gosh, I’d rather be the youngest!” he quipped.
LaPlante knows how to tell a good story, is full of great advice and tips, and has lots to tell us about the Peace Corps including some surprises.
Not only can the Peace Corps be a good deal in numerous ways but welcomes older people more than ever as volunteers, he says.
“They have experience! Maturity! Desire!,” he says of this wonderful and life-changing adventure.
LaPlante says the Peace Corps was good but not perfect and will discuss some of the challenging surprises.
Overall, he recommends the experience heartily and says, “Sometimes things get stale in our job, our career. We need a change. Sound familiar? Consider Peace Corps!”
The Author Series will also feature Lynn Berger on Wednesday, December 7.
Both events are free but advance sign up is encouraged. Please call the library at 860.663.2000 for additional details.
