Jail Time for Thief Who Rolled in a Wheelchair and Ran Out with a $37,000 Rolex: Report

The Waterbury resident entered a plea in court on Wednesday.

WATERBURY, CT — Larry Johnson, 36, of Waterbury pleaded guilty and will serve six years in prison on robbery and assault charges for a scam in which he used a wheelchair in a jewelry store heist and escaped by running away.

The Connecticut Post reports that Johnson used the ruse to rip off a $37,000 Rolex watch from the Sidney Thomas jewelry store in the Stamford Town Center in August 2014. He wheeled himself into the store, asked to see the watch, then jumped out of the chair and ran off. But not before he maced the clerk and security guard, who he also knocked to the ground.

Though he escaped from the store, police were able to identify Johnson - who reportedly has an extensive criminal record - from a fingerprint. He is scheduled to be formally sentenced in December.
