Carol Bufithis was once an elementary school teacher, but left education to make a more direct impact on people’s health and well-being - opening the Therapeutic Massage Center, in Middlefield, in 1983.

“I saw students and parents handling stress poorly. I realized I wanted to help people make changes in their lifestyle choices so they could lead a rich and authentic life,” explained Bufithis.

She initially thought she would reach her goal through nutrition, but soon found massage as the best path. Through massage and other spa offerings, Bufithis feels she has been successful over the years helping people “find an integrated body-mind connection in order to heal or stay well.”

Some customers arrive at Therapeutic Massage Center in pain, after an injury or with soreness after “overdoing it” during activities like shoveling snow. Some have a sore back from sleeping on a bad mattress. Some just want relaxation and an hour of bliss. This writer has been going to TMS for years and might even trade food to keep the experience in my budget. Don’t just take my word for it though.

TMC has a long list of testimonials on their website. The quiet, welcoming atmosphere is not intimidating as some super-spas can be. The streamline décor in this separated portion of a home, along with the personalities of the staff, make it very approachable. The entry way and rooms feature the work of local artists and Bufithis rotates the exhibit every two months.
