Popular Durham Farm Closing Down

One of Durham's last dairy farms will close down for good after more than 30 years.

DURHAM, CT — Slumping dairy prices have forced the Greenbacker family to close down Brookfield Farm. The family has been in the farming business since the 1700's.

The price of milk is set by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Farms in the Midwest and West are often bigger and have lower property taxes and operational costs, Joe Greenbacker told the Record-Journal.

The family decided to cut their losses and auction off the herd and sell the property.

Greenbacker's daughter Melissa Dziurgot told NBC Connecticut that it means a lot to the family that many people in the community are heartbroken over the decision.

The Greenbacker herd will be auctioned off and the property sold. The Greenbacker's Agway Country Store in Meriden will also be sold.
