Fire causes significant damage to East Hartford home (wfsb.com) — Firefighters in East Hartford battled a major blaze early Wednesday on Bliss Street that heavily damaged the back of an occupied home but caused no injuries. Crews attacked from outside because flames were already through multiple floors, blocking off the road while they worked, and investigators are now trying to determine what sparked the fire.
   

2. I-84 west in East Hartford closed after crash with serious injuries, police say (ctpost.com) — A serious crash has shut down I-84 west in East Hartford this morning, with lanes closed near Exit 58 and traffic backing up toward Manchester. State police report at least one person seriously injured and taken to a hospital, and they're urging drivers to use alternate routes and expect delays until the highway can safely reopen.
   

3. Middletown convenience store ticket delivers big win for East Hartford player (shorenewsnetwork.com) — An East Hartford resident has scored a $10,000 prize on a 20X Cash 10th Edition scratch-off, according to recent Connecticut Lottery records. The winning ticket was sold at Stop & Go Food Mart in Middletown, and while the player's identity isn't public, the win still brings some feel-good news back home to East Hartford.
   

4. Police Justified in 2009 Fatal Shooting of East Hartford Man (news-usa.today) — State oversight officials have ruled that East Hartford and West Hartford officers were justified in the 2009 fatal shooting of Robert Gilbert, an East Hartford man described as suicidal and armed. The long-delayed finding highlights how police accountability reviews have changed in Connecticut, with today's independent Inspector General now required to issue timely, public use-of-force decisions.
   

5. Undergraduates Create a New Method to Help Warn of Skin Damage During Radiation Therapy (uconn.edu) — UConn students will showcase ChromaShield, a wearable patch to detect radiation-related skin damage earlier, at the Wolff New Venture Competition in East Hartford. The free event runs October 13 from 5–9 p.m. at Pratt & Whitney Stadium at Rentschler Field, offering residents a chance to see local med-tech startups compete for more than $150,000 in prizes.
