This Sunday, May 25, at 1:00 PM, the Nathan Hale Memorial
Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) will be hosting a
Docent Workshop at the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse, 29 Main St., East Haddam, for
anyone interested in learning how to be a docent for the Nathan Hale
Schoolhouse this summer and fall.
A docent is a person who volunteers to guide visitors at the
schoolhouse. The docent explains the history of the schoolhouse and the role
Nathan Hale, our official State Hero, played in that history and how he became
a spy during the Revolutionary War. Docents will learn how Nathan Hale, at the
request of General George Washington, entered enemy lines, was captured as a
spy and was hung at the age of 21.
The docent training will be conducted by the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR) State President Stephen Shaw who is also the Real
Property Steward responsible for both Nathan Hale Schoolhouses in East Haddam
and New London, and also the Revolutionary War Office in Lebanon, CT.

These properties are owned by the SAR, and the DAR assists
with the care and docenting for the properties. The Revolutionary War Office in Lebanon became the property of SAR in 1891, while the East Haddam Nathan Hale
Schoolhouse was presented to the SAR in 1900. In 1901, the SAR also took
ownership of the New London Schoolhouse.
Docenting is a lot of fun and a chance to meet very
interesting people. If you wish to participate in the workshop to learn how to
become a schoolhouse’s docent or if you have any questions, please contact
Linda Wallace, Regent for the Nathan Hale Memorial Chapter, at 860-267-9952 or lindawallace37@aol.com.
