East Hampton Bounces Back

Iannone beats Valley for fifth win of the season.

A fourth-inning run was all East Hampton needed as they edged Valley Regional 1-0 in Deep River on Monday.

The matchup of the two Shoreline Conference Large Division leaders was decided by a lone run which came in the fourth inning.

With two out and nobody on, East Hampton's Adam Michaud hit a long double off the left field wall. With Alex Iannone at the plate with two strikes, Michaud attempted a steal of third. Valley catcher Matt Camilleri's throw sailed into left field and Michaud trotted home putting the Bellringers ahead, 1-0.

"If they see an opportunity, they can go on their own," East Hampton coach Scott Wosleger said. "They have to be sure, and Adam saw an opportunity to force the action."

The run stood up as Iannone scattered four hits in 6 1/3 innings. It was the the fifth win against no losses for the senior.

"He was very good today," Wosleger said. "He does what an experienced kid does. He flat out knows how to win."

Iannone gave way to freshman Marvin Gorgas, who again shut the door for his fifth save.

"Al did not even blink when we went to the young guy," Wosleger said. "He just wants to win and could care less about finishing the game for his own gain or stats. That's the intangible he brings."

This was a big win for East Hampton, which lost on Friday to Haddam-Killingworth at home.

"They showed me something today," Wosleger said. "I challenged them after our loss on Friday. How they responded would define our season. They answered. They are a tough group."

The win puts East Hampton in a good position in the division and conference at 9-2 overall (8-2 in the SLC). Valley falls to 7-5 (7-3 in the SLC).

The Bellringers are back in action Wednesday night as it plays under the lights in East Haddam against Hale-Ray.
