East Hampton Wins Energy Challenge

Town residents reduced their energy costs by 20 percent over the past three years.

Leaders from East Hampton gathered this past Wednesday to celebrate the success of The Connecticut Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge, a three year community energy savings program that helped local residents save money, reduce energy use and give back to their local economy.

“The town was very excited to see so many people take action to reduce their home’s energy use," said Town Manager Mike Maniscalco. "With this program almost two hundred homes made the commitment to save money and make their homes more comfortable."

The Connecticut Neighbor to Neighbor Energy Challenge was made possible by a $4.17 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy as part of the Better Buildings initiative. Over three years, Neighbor to Neighbor engaged residents in 14 towns, including East Hampton, helping them reduce their energy use by 20 percent.

Residents participated in programs such as the Home Energy Solutions assessment (HES). HES is an easy and affordable Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund program that provides a variety of home energy saving measures and pinpoints deeper actions that will cut energy wasted by a home. In all, over 150 East Hampton households participated in these programs, earning the town $5,575 that the town decided to put toward installing an electric vehicle charging station located at the Village Center.

Mr. Maniscalco stated that, “the charging station is a great way to show off our accomplishments as a community.  We are excited about the additional visitors and the potential boom to our local economy that this will bring.”
