Miss Connecticut to Visit East Hampton Girl Scout Troop

Chance encounter with local scout at Old Home Day Parade leads to visit.

At the invitation of Junior Girl Scout Vanessa Naughton, the reining Miss Connecticut, Morgan Amarone of Hamden, will visit East Hampton Troop 60636 on Friday. Miss Connecticut’s visit is scheduled to take place between 3:30 and 5 p.m. in the Center Elementary School cafeteria, 7 Summit St.

Vanessa Naughton, a 9-year-old fourth grader, met Miss Connecticut on July 9 when they were both marching in the East Hampton Old Home Day Parade. At that time, Miss Connecticut mentioned to Vanessa that one of the things she enjoys doing is speaking to groups such as Girl Scouts. She encouraged Vanessa to contact her later in the year to arrange a time to visit her troop. With help from her Dad, Vanessa contacted Miss Connecticut’s business manager and arranged for Miss Connecticut to visit Troop 60636 as part of their regular Girl Scout meeting.

Miss Connecticut will speak to the young Girl Scouts about becoming good citizens and being involved in their community, and she will also read from her book, Madison’s Journey, which she published this year. The book tells the story of an 11-year-old girl who learns that her friend, Sophie, has cancer. The character seeks out her own knowledge of the disease, and how she can help her friend. She also learns about ways she can live a cancer-preventative, healthy lifestyle, and how to raise awareness, specifically through organizing a dance show where the proceeds go to help Sophie's family.

The Girl Scouts will then be asked to write two lists on a piece of paper. The first list is of things they learned from the book, and the second will be topics important to them that they might want to write a book about. They will then share their lists with their fellow scouts.
