Portland Official To Discuss Saving Dog From 'Kill Order': Report

Portland's First Selectwoman wants to discuss alternatives to euthanizing a dog that attacked and injured a resident in 2016.

PORTLAND, CT — After attacking and injuring a resident in January 2016, local dog Rocky has been confined in the Portland Animal Shelter under a "kill order" for over two years, the Middletown Press reported. Now, First Selectwoman Susan S. Bransfield is attempting to change the dog's fate.

According to the Middletown Press, Bransfield is proposing town representatives sit down with owner Paul Bell's lawyer to discuss alternatives to euthanizing Rocky. Bransfield wrote the lawyer an email on the subject Friday but said she had not received a reply yet as of Wednesday.

Over the last couple years, Rocky's story has drawn passionate support from some residents, with many regularly showing up at Board of Selectmen meetings to make a plea for the dog to be reunited with his owner.

Supporters have started both a Change.org petition, which has garnered over 3,000 signatures as of Thursday afternoon, and a GoFundMe campaign, which has raised nearly $400 toward a $5,000 goal as of Thursday afternoon.

"Those who have met Rocky can't understand why this kill order was issued based on his demeanor and disposition," the GoFundMe page reads. "Rocky has been reviewed by three different animal behaviorists and all have come to the same conclusion that he is not an aggressive dog."
