Remembering CT Radio Legend Bob Steele

The Portland Historical Society will host Phil Steele, the son of legendary radio announcer, Bob Steele, at our Tuesday evening, April 23, 2013, program to be held at the Portland Library at 7:30 pm.  Steele, known to millions in southern New England as the morning voice of WTIC Radio, was one of the nation's longest-serving radio announcers. According to the Radio Hall of Fame web site, Steele had the top-rated morning show in the country. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1995, he died in 2002, but is still remembered fondly by his audience. Known for dry humor and his “word of the day,” Steele brightened mornings and delivered music, news, weather, and features from 1943 to 1991.  He left voluminous scrapbooks, photographs, diaries, original cartoons and drawings, and yes, his jokes.  This presentation by Bob’s son, Phil Steele, will give you the chance to see the man behind the microphone.
Our monthly program meetings are open to the public free of charge and are followed by refreshments.  Please join us on a trip down memory lane for what promises to be an enjoyable evening.
