Retirement is in Betsy Morgan’s Future

After 10 years at the helm of the Middlesex Coalition for Children, Executive Director Betsy Morgan has decided it’s time to retire. But what many don’t know is that Morgan, who co-founded the organization in 1992, has been the executive director for the past 10 years as a volunteer, running the organization out of her house with no budget.

“It was either close or find a way to keep it going,” Morgan said. “I stepped in as a volunteer. I didn’t know it would last 10 years.”

The Middlesex Coalition for Children is an alliance of parents, educators, children's service providers, and community activists dedicated to improving the lives of children in Middlesex County.

On Thursday, June 13, members of the Coalition, legislators, and other advocates of children gathered at Middlesex Community College to honor Morgan with a public reception. Senators Dante Bartolomeo, Paul Doyle, Art Linares and Rep. Joe Serra presented Morgan with an official citation from the General Assembly, acknowledging Morgan’s dedication to the Coalition and Middlesex County’s youngest citizens. Attendees also had the chance to meet Morgan’s successor, Izzi Greenberg. The Coalition’s board was able to secure funding to pay the next executive director.

In the spirit of Morgan’s commitment and dedication, donations can be made in her honor to The Children's Fund at the Community Foundation of Middlesex County, a fund she helped create, along with her friend, Jane McMillan. Funds will support programs and initiatives designed to improve the quality of life and secure a brighter future for children throughout Middlesex County.

"Friends and community members can honor Betsy, her passion to help children, and her many years of work on children’s issues by contributing to The Children's Fund and encouraging others to do the same," said Christine Fahey, School Readiness Coordinator for the Middletown Public Schools.
