Trap Rock, Steampunk, Colonial Games and the Hartford County 4-H Fair

Trap Rock in Connecticut — The Portland Library presents "Trap Rock in Connecticut," a program detailing the formation of the town's great trap-rock ridges, on Monday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m. Peter M. LeTourneau, the president of GeoEnvironmental Sciences LLC and an associate research scientist at Columbia University, is putting on the program. Call the library to pre-register.

Steampunk in the Victorian Age — Books & Boos in Colchester is hosting a talk on domestic technology in the Victorian era by author and museum consultant Jennifer Eifrig and writer Bruce Hesselbach on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. 

Colonial Games Day — Ever wonder what kids did for fun in the 18th and early 19th century? You know, before the X-Box and iPhone? Come check out Colonial Games Day at the Welles Shipman Ward House on Route 17 in South Glastonbury on Thursday, Aug. 15, from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. Space is limited and reservations are required.  Children ages 6-12 are welcome, and admission is $5.  Call 860-633-6890 for reservations and visit www.hsgct.org for more information.

Hartford County 4-H Fair — Come support the region's 4-Hers starting Friday, Aug. 16, at the Four Towns Fairgrounds in Somers! Tons of livestock events are on tap, as well as live entertainment on Saturday and Sunday. For more information check out www.hartfordcounty4hfair.org.

Tour Cedar Hill Cemetery — Have an interest in history? Cedar Hill Cemetery Foundation Director Beverly Lucas will be leading a tour through the Hartford cemetery's grounds and highlighting some of the more notable residents buried there. As a bonus, you get to watch the sun set over Cedar Mountain. Admission is $5. Visit cedarhillfoundation.org or call 860-956-331 for more info.
