$4.5M For Family Of Woman Killed In East Haven Police Chase: Report

East Haven resident Elena Laspino, 58, was killed when her vehicle was struck by a stolen SUV that was being chased by East Haven police.

EAST HAVEN, CT — The family of East Haven resident Elena Laspino, the hospice nurse killed in an East Haven police chase in 2020, will receive $4.5 million in a settlement reached between the town and Laspino's family, the New Haven Register reported.

Laspino, 58, was killed when a vehicle she was driving was struck by a stolen SUV that was being chased by East Haven police, WTNH-TV reported.

Two of Laspino's sisters sued the town, claiming the high-speed chase led to Laspino's death. The stolen vehicle was driven by a juvenile, who was arrested but not injured in the crash; the vehicle reportedly had been stolen from Rye, New York.

Attorney John F. Buckley, Jr., who represented the sisters, told the Register that the settlement holds the town and its police department accountable for the results of the chase, which he said should never have happened.
