East Haven Police Seize Significant Amount of Heroin and Crack Cocaine Near a School: Police

East Haven police say they took the suspect into custody on Thursday.

East Haven, CT - Police seized a significant amount of heroin, crack cocaine and marijuana while they were serving an arrest warrant, police said.

Police said during the month of June the department obtained two arrest warrants for Muhanad Jawad, 21, for motor vehicle charges including engaging in pursuit.

Jawad also had a felony failure to appear warrant stemming from a case involving an illegal possession of a firearm. Jawad was known to carry firearms and was engaged in sales of narcotics, police said in a news release.

At 3:20 p.m. Thursday officers saw Jawad operating a gray Kia Rio with Maryland marker plates enter the parking lot of 520 Main Street.

Jawad drove this vehicle to the south side of the parking lot and parked next to the entrance to the apartments of building 520, police said.

Upon exiting his vehicle, police took Jawad into custody without incident.

The arrest was made within 1,500 feet of Overbrook Elementary School. Upon searching Jawad’s vehicle, officers discovered 27 bags of heroin weighing 5.8 grams, 29 bags of crack cocaine weighing 12.3 grams, 2 bags of powder cocaine weighing 1.2 grams, and a jar of marijuana weighing 4.4 grams, police said.

The heroin, crack cocaine, and powder cocaine were found hidden inside a false lint roller which had a hidden compartment within it, police said.

Jawad was held on bonds totaling $385,000. He is charged with numerous narcotics violations.
