EAST HAVEN, CT – East Haven officials had hoped to start the school year with a full-time schools boss in place but it appears that won’t be the case.

Assistant Superintendent of Schools Erica Forti has been serving as Acting Superintendent of Schools while the Board of Education searches for a new boss to head the town’s educational system.

"The Board is in the process of reviewing resumes for a replacement for Erica Fortie as acting superintendent," said East Haven Board of Education Chair John Finkle. "The school year will start with Mrs. Fortie in the position. The search is underway and targeted to have a candidate around the beginning of October."

School board members said when they appointed Forti acting superintendent that they planned to have a new, full-time superintendent in place by the time school opens this September.

The first day of school is this coming Tuesday, Aug. 28th, and there is no indication yet that a full-time school superintendent will be in place by the start of school.

School Superintendent Dr. Portia Bonner’s last day on the job was June 30th. Her contact was not extended by the school board.

Ironically, when Bonner was hired in July of 2013 to replace a retiring Anthony Serio, Forti was considered a leading applicant to fill the schools’ boss role.

But she declined to take the position at that time.
