Maturo's Possible Mayoral Opponent Emerges: Report

This time the challenger plans to run as a Democrat, according to a report.

EAST HAVEN, CT — Incumbent Mayor Joseph Maturo Jr. is already announced he is running for re-election and now comes word that Salvatore Maltese, who ran last time on the Independent line, is mounting a challenge but this time as a Democrat, the New Haven Register reports.

Maltese, 52, has formed an exploratory committee and is hoping to garner the backing of Democrats this time. He told the Register that uniting with the Democratic Town Committee will help secure victory in November.

Maltese came close to wrestling the Republican nomination away from Maturo back in 2015, losing by a vote of 35-27 by the Republican Town Committee. He then ran as an Independent candidate. Maltese owns the South Shore Laundromat and works as a director of Global Credit.
