Tweed-New Haven Airport: Not to divert your attention!

Diversions are once again a subject of discussion at Tweed-New Haven Airport.

Seems poor little Tweed-New Haven Airport ✈️ and Avelo 💛💜Airlines have gotten some bad press lately.

The Anti-Airport group, “10,000 Hawks” is up in arms over a recent spat of diversions. This, as their Social Media Campaigns continue with live “Airport Safety Patrols” and “Airport Safety Audits” each conveying reports of flight diversions and other alleged illegalities . The “10,000 Hawks” even proudly squawked in public over a handful of HVN diversions at the April 1 HVN EA meeting held at East Haven High School.

Then, as if on cue, a prominent Television Outlet here in Connecticut reported on this “daily dilemma“ with a slew of stories cataloging this “frequent drama” .

To add, Social Media Groups have taken up arms in order to add to the ritual of complaining about diversions.

This all makes for a convincing case that Tweed-New Haven Airport is a joke in terms of reliability. Or does it? What’s going on? These entities would love to see Tweed fail.

Nothing is going on.

Numbers don’t lie…people do.

Forget that Avelo operated 5,600 flights last year out of HVN in 2022.

How many of those flights diverted? Interestingly, the “10,000 Hawks” don’t convey that information and neither does that local Upstate Connecticut News Station that carried those diversion stories.

Forget that the number of diversions last year was infinitely small. But what do I know? Anti-Airport protesters have all the momentum. Northeast area airports are the “crutch” for Tweed.

While the Hawks and Media didn’t share relevant data with all of us in order to provide proper context to the diversions, I will.

Here is 3 months of www.flightaware.com data cataloguing route segments from all of the city pairs to HVN. Diversions often happen in bunches. This often has to do with bad weather. What a surprise!

FLL, PBI, BWI, RDU, BNA, SAV, ILM, TPA, MYR, CHS, MCO, SRQ, RSW are included.

Forgive me if there are minor overlaps in the data, I did my best. But alas, I’m no expert nor a researcher, and neither are Tweed’s foes.
