Operation Homefront
Every year (now in its 19th year) Operation Homefront hosts the Military Child of the Year&reg; Awards. The awards are open to military children between the ages of 13-18. There are 7 recipients 1 child from each branch of service and each recipient receives $10,000 CASH, a laptop, other donated goodies, and a 3-day trip to Washington, D.C. with us and their families.
Children are entered by nominations. Anyone that knows a military child can nominate any military child. So, you may nominate your students, friend&rsquo;s children, children can nominate their siblings and best friends and so on. The awards are open to Active Duty, reserves, Gold Star, National Guard, AND retired military children. The program is entirely FREE and exclusive to military children, and you do not need to create an account to submit a nomination.
If you know a military child, we would love to hear their story!! We would also appreciate if you would help us get the word out there to your military communities and families!

Somers Department of Veterans Affairs presented a Somers Veterans Coffeehouse on Saturday, July 25, 2026, from 8:30 am to 11:00 am at Somers Town Hall &ndash; Auditorium, 600 Main Street, Somers, CT. The event brought veterans, families, and supporters together for timely information about VA services and benefits, local tax information for veterans, and community discussion about future coffeehouses. Veterans, families, and supporters were welcomed.
Program and Community Invitation
The program featured the latest VA services and benefits updates, local tax information for veterans, a Veterans &amp; Families Legacy Park Project update, and a live veteran survey on future coffeehouses. Attendees had an opportunity to hear updates, review information, and share input about future gatherings.

The event host and guest speaker, Director David McCaffrey, shared the stage with appear his loyal and loving service dog, Reilly.&nbsp; The event was well attended and enjoyed by all attendees.

The Ellington Historical Society and Ellington Community Theatre are inviting community members to audition for &ldquo;Ellington Epitaphs: A Family Mystery&rdquo; an interactive cemetery tour that brings Ellington&rsquo;s past to life. During the tour, townspeople from the 1700s and 1800s return to share their fascinating, touching and sometimes surprising stories.
Auditions will be held Sunday, September 13, at 2 p.m. at the Nellie McKnight Museum. No acting experience is necessary. Organizers are looking for enthusiastic individuals who enjoy history and are willing to help tell the stories of the people who helped shape Ellington.
Those selected must be available for rehearsals on September 18 at 6 p.m.; September 26 from 11 a.m.&ndash;2 p.m.; October 2 at 6 p.m.; October 10 from 11 a.m.&ndash;2 p.m.; and October 16 from 6&ndash;9 p.m. A final practice and performance will take place Saturday, October 17, from 10 a.m.&ndash;7 p.m.

There is a new&nbsp;<a href="https://news.va.gov/?s=scams" target="_blank" rel="noopener nofollow">scam&nbsp;</a>targeting Veterans. The latest tactic involves sending fraudulent postcards claiming you (or your spouse) are entitled to &ldquo;extra VA benefits&rdquo; or additional payments, including CHAMPVA, TRICARE, and dental coverage, regardless of a VA disability rating. Don&rsquo;t fall for it.
These scammers claim to be affiliated with VA. They might instill a sense of urgency, pressuring you to contact them as soon as possible, or within five days. Their goal is to get you to call the number provided. Once you do, they will often use flattery and praise regarding your military service to gain trust. The scammer will attempt to obtain personal identifying information like your Social Security Number, bank account details or other sensitive information.
Never give this information over the phone or on the internet.
VA is monitoring the situation and urges you to remain vigilant against these fraudulent attempts to steal personal identifying information. You can help stop them:
<ul><li>Refuse to engage.</li><li>Do not call unverified numbers.</li><li>Hang up immediately if you are contacted by unsolicited numbers.</li></ul>
<h2>Common scam tactics</h2>
<ul><li>Unsolicited postcards, emails, texts or social media messages: Scammers will send communication claiming you qualify for extra VA benefits</li><li>Fake authority on calls or emails: Scammers may pretend to be VA officials and claim there&rsquo;s a problem with your benefits or account.</li><li>Phishing attacks: Scammers may send emails or text messages that appear legitimate but are designed to steal personal information through malicious links or attachments.</li><li>Payment requests: Scammers might demand payment using unconventional and untraceable payment methods, such as gift cards, wire transfers, bitcoin or prepaid debit cards.</li><li>Social media interactions: Scammers may try to build trust through social media messages or friend requests, only to exploit that trust for their own financial gain.</li></ul>
<h2>How to protect yourself</h2>
<ul><li>Never share any personal or financial information with unverified contacts.</li><li>Don&rsquo;t act on urgent requests from people you don&rsquo;t know. Legitimate VA communications will not pressure you to respond immediately or provide sensitive information.</li><li>If you receive a suspicious postcard, email, text or call, do not call the number provided or click on any links.</li><li>Always verify the sender&rsquo;s identity; when in doubt, call VA directly at 1-800-827-1000.</li><li>Be cautious on social media. Ignore friend requests or messages from people you don&rsquo;t know or recognize.</li></ul>
<h2>If something seems wrong</h2>
If you miss a VA benefits payment, notice a discrepancy, or suspect suspicious activity with your direct deposit, contact VA right away at&nbsp;1-800-827-1000. If you suspect you have experienced fraud, you can find out more and report to the appropriate agency at VSAFE.gov or by calling 1-833-38V-SAFE.

The Jay Medal for Service was created in 2012 to recognize individuals who demonstrate a selfless spirit of commitment to and engagement with their community mirroring the multifaceted contributions of John Jay and his descendants. These honorees have demonstrated through their life's work that our shared narratives as a country, complicated as they are, can be better illuminated through the highest caliber of ongoing scholarship and advocacy.
