Is There Such a Thing as a Sock Monster?
Okay, we know that sock monsters don't really exist, but doesn't it seem like it? Doesn't it seem like every time you do a wash, at least one sock is missing?

Do you have a sock monster living in your house?
I know I do and so do many of my friends. I’ve heard that the tiny baby socks disappear even more frequently.
Urbandictionary.com provides this definition and commentary about sock monsters: Found in (or around) washing machines and tumble dryers. Thought to be a genetically modified, highly evolved organism. Although never actually sighted, evidence points to its habits and breeding cycle. A voracious predator, the sock monster preys on single socks, always leaving behind one of the pair it has captured. Mystery surrounds this behavior, although zoologists surmise this may be an instinctual mechanism for long term survival. Able to cross great distances at speed and unseen, there is almost no known method of defense. Currently, there is a research program to capture one and study its life cycle to provide some relief. The only known fact is sock monster numbers are proportional the number of people in residence at one location.
Okay, we know that sock monsters don’t really exist, but doesn’t it seem like it? Doesn’t it seem like every time you do a wash, at least one sock is missing? Where do they go? Do they have a secret island they aren’t telling us about?
Turns out that sometimes the socks fall behind the washer or dryer, get misplaced elsewhere, or get stuck in another item of clothing in the wash.
If this is the case in your household, there are a few ways to try to stop it from happening.
The first is to consider washing smaller items like socks, wash cloths, and undergarments in their own load to prevent socks from being hidden in larger things. You could even do a load of just socks!
You could also try pinning each pair together with a safety pin before putting them in the washing machine. You could also give each family member a mesh bag to put their socks in.
Another thing you could try is having everyone roll their dirty socks into pairs so that they go into the laundry that way. Then, don’t unroll them until they go into the washer. As soon as they come out of the dryer, roll them back up.
Hopefully this will help and the sock monster will get hungry and leave your house to go find better hunting grounds.
