Keeping Your House Clean When You Have Children

This can be a difficult task, but Maid Brigade of Northern Connecticut has some advice for how to do it.

By Maid Brigade of Northern CT

You have kids running around the house, screaming and making a mess out of everything.

How do you keep your house clean when you have children?

One way is to establish a morning routine. This may involve some quiet time where you make the bed, hang up the towels from the shower, or throw in some laundry. If you start out the day by doing a few things, you will feel more ready for the day.

Something simple like cleaning the sink can make things seem less overwhelming. Something about a shiny sink keeps you from letting dirty dishes pile up in the kitchen and from finding discouraging stuff like hair and toothpaste in the bathroom.

You can also take a little time each day to quickly clean up. Everyone participates and you can pick things up, put things away, and generally tidy things up. Even one “10-minute cleaning frenzy” a day helps to keep the frustration away.

A nightly kitchen clean up can also help to ease the frustration. Put away the dishes, load the dishwasher, wipe off the counters, and clean the sink. Waking up to a clean kitchen can help make your day feel less overwhelming.

When you have children, being organized is also a key. When it comes to their toys, get rid of as much as you can and don’t buy things you don’t need. Kids today have far more than they actually need, or can manage on their own, and if you take the time to sit down with them and go through their things, you might be surprised at what they’re willing to let go of. Take the toys, books, or clothes to a consignment store or donate them.

If you help them identify what’s really special, important, and useful to them, and keep only those things, it will be much easier for your children to take responsibility for the care and maintenance of their own space and belongings.

Keep the toys that you do have in a bin or a basket. You could also limit the toys to one room. Label the bins or baskets so things are neat and organized – and the kids can easily help put the toys away.
