4-Point Shots with the Harlem Globetrotters, Deploying Parachutes, and Lego Mania

Things to do with the kids Feb. 23 - March 1.

Here's this week's installment of the Patch Grab & Go Kids Planner, which recommends upcoming family- and kid-friendly activities in north central Connecticut.

When: Saturday, Feb. 26 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

Why Go: The Harlem Globetrotters take on the Washington Generals in a game that features 4-point shooting lines. The two designated 4-point shooting spots on each side of midcourt, each located 35 feet from the basket, are 12 feet beyond the NBA's official 3-point line. The 4-point option is expected to generate even more exciting high-scoring action and competitive play.

Where: New England Air Museum, 36 Perimeter Road, Windsor Locks.

When: On Thursday, Feb. 24, the cockpits of eight airplanes and helicopters will be open for children to explore. Children will have the opportunity to build and deploy parachutes and handle a parachute from WWII on Friday February 25 during the “Build & Explore Parachutes” program.  All of the daily activities run from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Why Go: Because flying machines are amazing for kids and adults alike. And playing pilot is fun.

Pricing: Admission is $10 for adults, $9 for seniors, $6 for children age 4-11, and free for children 3 and under.

 


Where:  Connecticut Science Center, 250 Columbus Boulevard, Hartford. 

When: Opened on Feb. 21, 2011.

Why Go: Arcade meets science. Visitors can test their ability to withstand gravity, friction and inertia while virtually speeding through the slopes on a pair of skis. Kids can try to master the forces of nature in this inventive alpine ski adventure.

Pricing: Admission to the center is $17 for adults, $15.50 for seniors, $14 for youth age 3-14. Children 2 and under are free.

 


Where: Enfield Public Library, 104 Middle Road, Enfield.  

When: Friday, Feb. 25 at 3:30 p.m.

Why Go: Kids 6-10 years old can dive into a huge collection of Legos and see what they can build in an hour. Work independently or team up with friends to invent something new.

Where: South Windsor Arena, 585 John Fitch Boulevard, South Windsor.

When: Saturday, Feb. 26 from 1:45 - 3:15 p.m. and
7:30 - 9 p.m., and Sunday, Feb. 27 from  1:35 - 3:05 p.m.

Why Go: Gliding across the ice with friends and family is a terrific traditional winter activity, and it tires out the kids in a good way.

Pricing: South Windsor Arena charges $7 for admission and $3 for skate rental.
