Enfield Man Charged With Attempted Theft from Windsor Locks Coin-Op Machine

The suspect has 18 prior convictions for offenses including burglary and larceny, according to judicial records.

WINDSOR LOCKS, CT - An Enfield man with an extensive criminal history was arrested early Monday morning after being caught attempting to break into a coin-operated vacuum cleaner, police said.

Alfred Alzak, 34, of 61 Till Street, was charged with two counts of first-degree criminal mischief, third-degree criminal trespass, possession of burglar tools, criminal attempt to commit fifth-degree larceny, second-degree threatening, possession of a controlled substance and operating under suspension.

Bond was set at $25,000, and he was scheduled to be arraigned in Enfield Superior Court Monday.

According to a police report, an off-duty officer called the Windsor Locks Police Department at 12:50 a.m. to report a suspicious person attempting to break into a coin-operated vacuum cleaner at the Mobil station at 107 Ella Grasso Turnpike.

When officers arrived, they found two hammers and a drill by the vacuum cleaner, and the suspect, Alzak, admitted he was trying to break into the machine. Police also found a large amount of contractor grade power tools in Alzak's vehicle and a prescription drug not belonging to him, the report said.

Alzak was arrested and placed in a police cruiser, but was able to slip the handcuffs under his legs and place the handcuffs in front of his body. He then pulled a piece of the plastic partition that separated him from the officer and snapped it off, causing additional damage to the partition estimated at over $1,000, the report said.

While causing the damage, Alzak made threats toward the officer that he was going to kill him, according to the report.

Police are continuing to investigate the large amount of tools found in Alzak's vehicle, and additional charges are possible, police said.

Alzak's criminal history includes 18 prior convictions ranging from 2007 to 2012, including larceny, burglary, criminal mischief, narcotics and violation of probation stemming from various arrests in East Windsor, Enfield, Windsor Locks and South Windsor. In 2012, he was sentenced to five years in prison, suspended after three years, and five years probation, according to judicial records.
